Druid Hills Highlanders 2.1 4.5 5.9 8.10 (58) Decatur Devils 4.4 9.5 18.7 21.9 (135) The turnout for the second round of the Fall 2007 AARFL Season was a little improved from the first week, but still low. The first game for the day was between the Decatur Devils and the Druid Hills Highlanders. Decatur would be without their star recruit Michael Erickson, a ten goal kicker from the previous week, and Druid Hills would be bolstered by the return of Captain Alan Mobley and Ross LaRosa. Would this be enough to help the Highlanders to be more competitive this week?
As in the first week, another player could not stay for the second game, and was allowed to be "loaned" to another team playing in the first game. Midtown's James Glenn suited up for Decatur, as they were shorter on players.
Decatur controlled more of the play from the onset, and Warren Ballagh converted that to three goals, helped by one from Glenn. Druid Hills' only scoring chances were all from LaRosa, who kicked through two goals and a behind. At the first break, the Devils lead 28 to 13.
The second term was a lot more evenly played, except for accuracy at goalkicking. Decatur kicked only one behind for the quarter, as their sights were almost perfectly calibrated. Ballagh collected three more goals, while Mike Powers and first-gamer Ryan Garrett had one each. Druid Hills had about the same number of shots on goal, but only two actually split the middle, one from Adam Grist, and another from LaRosa. At half time, Decatur's goalkicking accuracy had extended their lead further, 59 points to Druid Hill's 29.
Decatur came out all guns blazing in the third quarter, and blew the game wide open. Glenn had three more goals in the term, as well as another to Ballagh, and in the middle of the quarter, Adam Stevens kicked five goals in a row, in a great individual display. They were also able to keep Druid Hills to only one goal from LaRosa. By the last change, the Devils had blown by the 100 point mark, to lead by 76 points. Decatur let up off the gas a little in the final quarter, as the goalscoring was limited to a final three from Ballagh, to finish the game with ten goals, the second week in a row that a Devils player has done so. Andy Ciganek was able to put three through for Druid Hills. The final siren sounded with Decatur running out winners, 135 to 58. DRUID HILLS Best - Mobley, LaRosa, Ciganek, Grist Goals - LaRosa 4, Ciganek 3, Grist DECATUR Best - Ballagh, Spencer, Stevens, Garrett Goals - Ballagh 10, Stevens 5, Glenn 4, Garret, Powers Roswell Rebels 0.1 1.5 4.8 5.10 (40) Midtown Bombers 4.1 11.2 17.4 22.6 (138) The second game of the day was again another blowout. The rebuilding Roswell Rebels were just no match for the powerful Midtown Bombers.
The thumping began early, as Midtown jumped out to a 24 point lead at the end of the first quarter, through two goals from the "wily veteran" Jim Batten, and one each from Adam Jennings and Ed Robinson. Roswell could only manage one behind.
In the second quarter, Roswell had five scoring shots, but unfortunately, it only resulted in one goal from Justin Diamond. Midtown, however, did just the opposite, only kicking one behind. Goalscorers were Robinson with three, and Batten and Greg Cave with two each. At halftime, the Bombers were up by 57 points.
The third quarter started with a new player on the field for Roswell. Abe Futch, who is a Druid Hills recruit, could not get to the ground for the first game, and was allowed to suit up for the Rebels in the second half of this game. He showed much promise for a first-gamer. Roswell was able to step it up a bit, as Mick Frost showed why he was named team Captain, playing through illness and contributing two goals. Always hard-working Brent Kewley put through another. Midtown wasn't about to let up, however, as they continued their assault on the goals. Jennings, who had been dominating in the ruck all game, kicked two more, as did Robinson. Dan Heffernan and Curtis Jones added one each. The term ended with the Bombers hitting the century mark on the scoreboard, as they lead Roswell 106 to 32.
It was more of the same in the fourth quarter, as Cave and Robinson put through two more each for Midtown, in addition to one more from Batten. Roswell was almost completely out of gas, mustering only one goal from Diamond. Midtown finished up the game with a resounding 98 point win.
This sets up a couple of interesting games in the next round, to be played October 20th. No games until then due to the Kookaburras' AFL Grand Final Party late next Friday night, and the USFooty National Championships. The first game will be the much-anticipated battle of the "heavyweights", as the all-conquering Midtown side will face the much-improved Decatur team. Both teams have dominated their opponents in the first two rounds, and each have potent offenses, as both have hit the century mark on the scoreboard by three-quarter time in every game so far. The second game will be between the two winless sides this season, Druid Hills and Roswell. Who will hit the halfway point of the Fall 2007 Season undefeated, and who will get their first win? ROSWELL Best - Frost, Kewley, Crist, Diamond Goals - Diamond, Frost 2 each, Kewley MIDTOWN Best - Mitchell, Robinson, Jennings, Heffernan Goals - Robinson 8, Batten 5, Cave 4, Jennings 3, Jones, Heffernan
