Druid Hills Highlanders 5.4 10.8 14.11 19.15 (129) Midtown Bombers 3.0 4.1 5.2 6.2 (38)
Report In the first matchup of the day, the Druid Hills Highlanders continued their dominant play from the first week, never being threatened by the Midtown Bombers. Druid Hills jumped out of the gate early and put nine scoring shots through in the first quarter, to Midtown's three. The only thing keeping Midtown in the game was their accuracy at kicking for goal, as Wayne Mitchell, Jim Batten and Darren Fagan all kicked truly. The quarter ended with Druid Hills leading 5.4.34 to 3.0.18. Druid Hills completely controlled the midfield, while Marc Buhaj, Ben Crist, and others were peppering the Midtown end with scoring shots. The Bombers could manage only the one goal by Greg Cave for the second term, as the halftime score read 10.8.68 to 4.1.25.
It was more of the same in the third, as Midtown's only goal came from Fagan, while Druid Hills extended their lead to 14.11.95 to Midtown's 5.2.32. Druid Hills piled on another five goals in the fourth, as Brent Kewley started showing some offensive flair with two goals and a behind, while Midtown only split the posts once through Cave's second of the game. Interestingly, Midtown finished the game having not kicked a single behind, as both of their behind scores were rushed through by the Highlanders. But their accuracy was no match for their opponent's sheer quantity, as Druid Hills 19.15.129 defeated Midtown 6.2.38. DRUID HILLS: Goals: Buhaj (5), Crist (5), Kewley (3), Monsour (2), Mobley, Ciganek, Lucy, Rotell (1 each) Best: Buhaj, Kewley, Ciganek, Crist, Mobley
MIDTOWN: Goals: Cave (2), Fagan (2), Batten & Mitchell (1 each) Best: Mitchell, Cave, Heffernan, Fagan
Decatur Devils 2.1 4.1 4.3 5.4 (34) Roswell Rebels 4.3 6.11 12.12 16.16 (112)
Report
In the second game, the Roswell Rebels were never troubled by an undermanned Decatur Devils side. In his first game back since suffering a broken leg earlier in the year, Roswell's Thad Sheffield kicked two goals in the opening quarter, to go along with one each from Mike Frost and Johnny O'Sullivan. Decatur could only muster two goals and a behind, all from first-gamer Darren Poole, and found themselves down 4.3.27 to 2.1.13 at the first break. Roswell couldn't hit the proverbial "side of a barn" in the second quarter, as Frost kicked two goals, to go along with a shocking eight behinds from the team. Jeff Trebb and Jim Whooley countered with a goal each for the Devils, to stay somewhat within reach at halftime, down 6.11.47 to 4.1.25. As in last week's game, Roswell took control in the "premiership quarter". After doing a stellar job at fullback last week, first-year player Joey Gilkey lined up at full forward, and responded with two goals, to go along with two by Hugo Sach. Decatur could manage nothing but two behinds, as Roswell stretched the lead out to 12.12.84 to 4.3.27. Decatur played hard all game long and never gave up, but by the final quarter were just too tired to keep up. Tim Roberson kicked a goal and a behind, but the Rebels countered with four goals of their own to run out comfortable winners. Final score: Roswell 16.16.112, to Decatur's 5.4.34.
DECATUR: Goals: Poole (2), Roberson, Trebb & Whooley (1 each) Best: Roberson, Heberlein, Trebb, Whooley
ROSWELL: Goals: Frost (4), O'Sullivan (3), T Sheffield (3), Gilkey (2), Sach (2), Diamond & Sullivan (1 each) Best: Sach, Diamond, O'Sullivan, Gilkey, Frost
This sets up the matchup of the two undefeated teams next weekend, as Druid Hills takes on Roswell. Druid Hills looks to be the favorite, with two lopsided victories. Can Roswell step up and knock them off? Meanwhile, Midtown and Decatur will be in what is sure to be a fierce battle, as each team looks for their first win, and desperately tries to avoid dropping to 0-3.
