In a end to the season that could only be described as controversial the Roswell Rebels won the 2008 Fall AARFL Premiership trophy with a final game draw that wasn't verified till hours later. One of the closest competitions in AARFL history came down to the last game of the season. A win by either team would give them the trophy. Midtown, with the better percentage, trailed Roswell by a game and after easily beating Roswell in the previous two games, felt confident about their chances. But Roswell would not lie down. There was never more than a goal in it during the game, until Midtown went up by 3 goals late in the last quarter. Or so they thought. It turns out the score board did not match the official scoresheet Midtown dropped back into second gear allowing Roswell to kick a couple of goals, one of them Garofalo, after the final siren had sounded.
With Midtown celebrating, what they thought was their fourth title in a row, photos were taken and the trophy presented. It wasn't until some hours later that statistician-extraordinare Marty Hyder audited the score sheet and found that the final result was in fact a draw, 11 goals 11 behinds each and that Roswell had won the AARFL trophy. This made the Roswell team very happy, especially Garafalo as he had kicked, what turned out to be, the season winning goal.
Being the sportsman that he is, Midtown Captain-Coach Curtis Jones presented the trophy to Roswell representative Mick Frost at the Kookaburra's Annual General Meeting later that night without fuss and congratulated him on his winning season. While this is a blow to Midtown's pride, it will certainly make for an interesting 2009 Spring season due to start in February.
