Midtown Bombers                2.4   8.5   13.8    16.10   (106)
Druid Hills Highlanders         2.4   3.5     8.5      15.6    (96)

MATCH REPORT:

The first matchup of the weekend was the Midtown Bombers taking on the undefeated Druid Hills Highlanders. Midtown came out ready to pull off an upset, and took the early lead through two goals to Jim Batten. Druid Hills fought back with one each to Ben Crist and Marc Buhaj, and the first quarter ended with the scoreboard knotted at 2.4.16 each.

Midtown jumped all over Druid Hills in the second, as Batten put through four more majors, helped by one each from Damien Sheehan, and Ron Sheffield, playing in his first game of the season. Druid Hills could only counter with one from Crist, and went into the halftime break in an unfamiliar situation, trailing the Bombers 8.5.53 to 3.5.23. The Highlanders realized they were in danger of their first defeat, so they turned up the goalkicking and had perfect aim in the third term, as "Disco" Dave Monsour found the goals three times, along with one each from Crist and Buhaj. Midtown countered with five of their own, including two from Sheehan and one each from Greg Cave, Sheffield, and Batten, as well as two behinds, to slightly increase their lead to 13.8.86 to 8.5.53.

Druid Hills mounted a furious challenge in the final quarter, as Buhaj played like a man possessed, kicking five goals, to go along with one each from Crist and Monsour. But with another goal to Sheehan and two more to Batten (who finished with nine for the day), Midtown was just able to hold on for a 10 point win, becoming the first team to knock off the vaunted Druid Hills team this season. Final score: Midtown 16.10.106, Druid Hills 15.6.96.

Roswell Rebels           (60)
Decatur Devils              (0)-forfeit

MATCH REPORT:

Another week, another forfeit for the Decatur Devils. For the second week in a row, Decatur could not get the minimum number of players to the ground by gametime for an official game. Because of this, the Roswell Rebels were the recipient of an automatic 10-goal victory, as per league rules. A Roswell 10.0.60 to 0.0.0 victory will go into the books, but again, an "unofficial" co-ed practice match was played in it's place. Some of the Druid Hills and Midtown players who wanted to play some more footy, along with some women players, were added to the two teams' squads.

The Roswell team just pretty much dominated this "scratch" match. The onslaught started from the outset, as in the first quarter, Thad Sheffield kicked four goals, Wayne Kraska had two, and Mike Frost and Brent Kewley had one each. The Decatur side could only manage one each from Ben Crist, Damien Sheehan, and Dave Monsour, and the term ended with Roswell up 8.1.49 to 3.2.20. It was more of the same in the second, with three more each to Roswell's Sheffield and Kraska, as well as two to Joey Gilkey's son, Joey Jr., who was convinced to give the sport a try and made a good showing for himself. Decatur scored a measley two behinds and ended the half down 16.3.99 to 3.4.22.

Pete Eckman showed up late for the Devils, and with his addition, they fought back in the third, with two goals to Crist, and one each to Judith Stein and Mike Powers, while holding the Rebels to two from Sheffield and one from Frost. But they were still miles behind on the scoreboard, 19.5.119 to 7.6.48. The fourth quarter mercifully ended after Hugo Sach kicked his first two, to go along with Frost's third and fourth for Roswell, and Crist's fourth and Stein's second for Decatur.

The final score of the practice match: Roswell 23.6.144, Decatur 9.9.63. The Roswell forfeit win sets up a very interesting game for next week, as Druid Hills' loss earlier in the day means that their game with Roswell will be "winner takes all" for the league championship. Also, Decatur will surely want to have a full team in attendance and put in a strong showing in their game against Midtown, in an attempt to avoid ending their season without a win.

BEST:
Roswell - Sach, Kraska, Gilkey, Frost, Sheffield
Decatur - Heberlein, Whooley, Stein, Powers
