Midtown Bombers           5.2    10.4    15.6     19.9  (123)

MATCH REPORT:

The first game played on this last Saturday of the 2006 AARFL season was the Midtown Bombers taking on the winless Decatur Devils. Decatur started off looking to possibly pick up their elusive first victory of the season as Ed Robinson, playing in his first game this year, opened the scoring, but it was all downhill for the Devils from that point onward.

Lance Van Putten, also in his first game this season after battling illness, kicked Decatur's only other goal for the quarter. Midtown countered with a well-rounded attack, as Jim Batten, Damien Sheehan, Greg Frost, Dan Heffernan, and new recruit Jeff Vach all kicked a goal each, to put Midtown up at the first break 5.2.32 to 2.2.14. It was more of the same in the second term, with two more goals for Batten, and one each from Wayne Mitchell, Vach, and Sheehan for Midtown, while Decatur could only answer with two goals to Joey Gilkey, Jr. to finish the quarter down 10.4.64 to 4.3.27.

Sheehan went on a tear for the Bombers in the third, notching four goals, along with one from Batten. Van Putten and Gilkey added one each for the Devils, as the quarter ended with them even further behind, 15.6.96 to 6.3.39. Robinson put in two goals for Decatur in the final quarter, helped by one from Darren Poole, but Midtown was not about to be merciful, adding one each from Vach, Sheehan, Heffernan, and one final goal to Batten, which proved to be enough for him to finish as the league's leading goalkicker of the season, with 22 goals, one ahead of the Druid Hills Highlanders' Marc Buhaj.

Final score: Midtown 19.9.123, Decatur 9.4.58. Decatur finishes the season without a win, and will surely have to do some recruiting in the off season. Midtown, however, after losing their first two games, must now feel confident about their chances next season, after finishing up winning three of their last four.

Roswell Rebels                   5.2    9.2     13.5     17.7  (109)

MATCH REPORT:

In the absence of a Grand Final game this season, for the first time, the team finishing on top of the ladder would be the AARFL Premiers. It had appeared that the Druid Hills Highlanders were going to cruise to the title, until they were surprisingly knocked off by Midtown last week. As both the Highlanders and the Roswell Rebels were entering this final game against each other with the same win-loss record, their matchup was a defacto Grand Final. Winner takes all.

The game began with Roswell exhibiting probably the hardest hitting and fiercest tackling seen this season, which put Druid Hills back on their heels from the opening ballup. They lost their composure a bit a few minutes into the game, as Briton Rotell was sent off for the remainder of the quarter for a late high tackle, forcing the Highlanders to play much of the quarter a man down. Druid Hills was also missing their usual ruckman, which resulted in Roswell's Hugo Sach controlling possession of the ball from much of the game's ballups. Wayne Kraska and Sach kicked two goals each, as well as one from Thad Sheffield, while Rotell and Disco Dave Monsour kicked one each for Druid Hills, as the term ended with Roswell up 5.2.32 to 2.1.13.

The high-powered offense of the Highlanders kicked in in the second, with two goals each from Disco and Marc Buhaj, and one each from Alan Mobley and Rotell. The Rebels bent, but didn't break, with only four scoring shots for the quarter, but all were accurate, as Mike Frost, Kraska, Sach, and Sheffield contributed a goal each, to end the half holding on to a one goal lead, 9.2.56 to 8.2.50.

Visions of a Premiership in their heads, Roswell turned it up a notch in the third, with two goals from Sach, and one each from Justin Diamond and Kraska, as they held Druid Hills to only a goal each from Rotell and Disco, to go into the final break leading 13.5.83 to 10.4.64. Early in the final quarter, Disco Dave unfortunately went down with a knee injury. As the Highlanders did not have a sub on their bench, Roswell was forced to remove a player from the field for the duration as well.

Frost went to work for Roswell, with three goals, while Kraska finished up the Rebels' scoring. Druid Hills got a goal each from Rotell, Mobley, and Buhaj, who finished just one goal shy of the goalkicking lead for the league, with 21 on the season. Final score: Roswell 17.7.109 defeat Druid Hills 13.6.84, leading from start to finish to take out the 2006 AARFL title.
