Roswell continue winning ways
Tuesday, 11 November 2008

The Roswell Rebels continued their good start to the 2008 Fall season with another win over the Midtown Bombers in round 2. The Rebels started well up forward again with 5 goals straight in the first quarter setting up a handy lead of 15 points at the first change. Carl Garafolo looked like he was in for another good game with 2 goals and his running with Brent Kewley was too much for Midtown Bombers to combat.

But what has been a characteristic of both games so far in the second quarter the lead was soon reduced to nothing as Midtown held Roswell goalless in the term and definitively got on top through the midfield. Shane Wamsley returning for a cameo performance was part of that effort as he stopped Roswells many attacks.

Russ Barner playing in the ruck was another reason for that charge with many direct taps to his Midtown midfielders Curtis Jones & Adam Grist. Up forward Eric Baker was also causing headaches for the Roswell defense with strong leading and marking. In the ruck Roswell relied again on part timers and using their running backline of Ben Crist and Nick Micklovski to set up attacks. So at the main break in perfect weather for football Midtown had regained the lead by 2 points.

The third term and the pendulum again swung the other way. The Rebels' Crist was hurting the Bombers off the half backline and Garafalo was starting to find his form from the previous week to kick easy goals. In a fairly even quarter the Roswell team edged back in front by 9 points.

So down to the wire with the game in the balance the Rebels tried more combinations in the ruck to try and stop Barner and Jones. Garafalo and Kewley stepped up some more and old timers Frost and Kraska provided enough presence to prevent Midtown from stringing a run of goals together. A 5 goal quarter by the Rebels let them run our easy winners by 26 points and take a two game lead in the season.

Thats sure to sting the Bombers into recruiting action for their next game on November 15th. The Georgia Down Under, Best on Ground award went to Ben Crist for his penetrating runs off the half backline and two goals.
